About the Beagle

Packs of small hounds were followed on foot across England for centuries, hunting hare at a pace a walking man could hold; Elizabethan accounts describe pocket beagles small enough to travel in a saddlebag. The modern breed was formalised in the nineteenth century and kept every bit of the nose. That nose is the whole story. A Beagle on a scent is not being disobedient, it is temporarily unable to hear you, and the voice it uses on finding something is a bay built to carry across a field rather than a kitchen. Owners learn to treat the worktop as storage of last resort. In the drawing the head is set low and slightly turned, tracking, because a Beagle at rest with its nose in the air is a Beagle nobody would recognise.
