About the Border Collie
On the hill farms either side of the Anglo-Scottish border, a dog was wanted that could work half a mile out, take a whistle across a valley, and move sheep without touching them. Most modern Border Collies trace back to Old Hemp, born in Northumberland in 1893, whose quiet, unfussy style became the template for the breed. The result is a dog that does not switch off. Owners know the crouch and the fixed stare, the eye, and the way it gets turned on children, cyclists, the shadow of a washing line, or a football that is never allowed to escape. Drawn for the archive, the portrait holds the head low and the gaze forward, because the collie's whole character sits in that stare rather than in the coat.
