About the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Toy spaniels sat at the feet of the Stuart court, and Charles II kept enough of them for diarists to complain about it. The modern breed is a deliberate reconstruction: in the 1920s Roswell Eldridge offered prize money at Crufts for spaniels of the older, longer-nosed sort shown in seventeenth-century portraits, and breeders answered him. What survived is a dog bred for company and for nothing else, which is exactly how it behaves. Cavaliers do not merely follow you upstairs, they wait outside the bathroom door, and they will choose a lap over a walk without appearing to weigh it up. Drawn for the archive, the ears are given the space they need to fall properly, since a Cavalier's whole expression depends on the frame they make around the face.
