The Dobermann story

Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann collected taxes in Apolda, in Thuringia, and also ran the local dog pound, which gave him both a reason to want protection on his rounds and the material with which to breed it. By the 1880s he had a dog of his own type: fast, clean-coated, unmistakably serious. Refinement continued after his death, and the breed moved into police and military service across Europe. Owners meet a rather different animal to the reputation, one that reads a room quickly, presses a shoulder into your leg and stays there, and complains about British weather, since that thin coat offers no help whatsoever in February. The archive plate is drawn with ears and tail left as the dog is born, the tan points marking out the structure underneath.

The Dobermann plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The Dobermann is Archive No. 019. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
