Long before shotguns, the springing spaniel put game into the air for falcons and nets, and it stands among the oldest of the British land spaniels. Springers and cockers came out of the same litters well into the nineteenth century, divided only by size and by the work each was set to. What that history left behind is a dog that treats a hedgerow as a list of tasks and can quarter ground all day without appearing to tire. Owners know the reunion after a five-minute absence, the enthusiasm for any water regardless of temperature or cleanliness, and the ears that need drying more often than the rest of the dog. The archive study catches the moment before the flush, weight forward and ears lifted, drawn working rather than posed.

The English Springer Spaniel plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The English Springer Spaniel is Archive No. 011. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it.
