About the French Bulldog
Nottingham lace workers took their small bulldogs with them when the trade moved to Normandy in the 1860s, and the type took root in France as a ratter and a fixture of Paris cafes and markets. American fanciers later insisted on the upright bat ear over the rose ear, and that argument settled the breed's face for good. The traits owners live with are unmistakable: the snoring, the wide catalogue of grumbles and yodels standing in for a proper bark, the head tilt held a beat longer than necessary, and a body that genuinely cannot swim. Weight in the drawing falls on the ears and on the folds above the nose, the two features carrying the entire expression, with the remainder of the plate kept deliberately spare.
