The German Shepherd Dog story

Max von Stephanitz set out in 1899 to standardise Germany's herding dogs into a single working type, registering Horand von Grafrath as the first of the breed. The job was tending: patrolling the edge of an unfenced flock all day, a living boundary rather than a driver. That endurance and biddability moved the breed into police and military work within a generation. Owners know the shadowing, a dog that relocates every time you change rooms and settles again with a sigh, and they know the coat, which comes away in handfuls twice a year and in smaller instalments the rest of the time. The plate concentrates on the line of the back and the set of the ears, drawn alert but unexaggerated, closer to the working dog than to the show ring.

The German Shepherd Dog plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The German Shepherd Dog is Archive No. 005. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
