About the Golden Retriever
At Guisachan, in the Highlands above Loch Affric, Lord Tweedmouth kept a careful stud book. In 1868 he mated a yellow retriever named Nous to a Tweed Water Spaniel called Belle, and the litter that followed is the foundation of the breed. It was built for retrieving from water and rough ground on a Scottish shooting estate, and the temperament was part of the specification rather than a happy accident. Owners will recognise the soft mouth put to unauthorised use, a slipper or a glove or a cushion carried to the door as a greeting, and the moulting, which is less a season than a condition. In the archive drawing, attention goes to the feathering along the tail and legs, the part of the coat that shows the water-dog descent most plainly.
