Nothing about the Great Dane is Danish. German nobility bred the type, known at home as the Deutsche Dogge, from mastiff and sighthound stock to hunt wild boar, work demanding both weight and speed, and the breed was formalised in Germany in the 1880s once that hunting had largely ended. What replaced the job is an unshakeable conviction that the dog is small. Owners describe the head arriving on a knee unannounced, the tail clearing a coffee table in a single sweep, and the slow leaning collapse against a leg that has to be braced for in advance. In the study, the artist lowered the head slightly and used the long clean line from ear to shoulder to carry the scale, so that size is implied by proportion rather than stated.
