In 1819 an Oxford undergraduate named John Russell bought a small white terrier called Trump from a milkman, then spent the rest of his life as a Devon parson breeding her descendants to bolt fox. The specification was narrow: white enough to be told from the quarry in poor light, small enough to go to ground, and game enough to face something underground alone. Two centuries on, the dog has not been told that the work has stopped. Owners know the vertical leap from a standing start, the excavation of a lawn on the strength of a single rumour, and the complete absence of proportion when meeting a much larger dog. The drawing keeps legs and body compact and puts the detail into the face, which is where the intent is.
