The Labrador Retriever story

Before the name, there was a working dog on the Newfoundland coast: the St John's water dog, which hauled lines and brought back cod and anything else that went over the side. Fishing boats landed them at Poole in Dorset in the early nineteenth century, and English estates, the Earl of Malmesbury's among them, took up the type for the shooting field. Everything about a Labrador still points at that job. The dense water-shedding coat, the thick otter tail used as a rudder, the compulsion to carry something in the mouth when you come through the door, and an appetite that has never once been satisfied. For the plate, the artist gave the tail its full weight and drew the head in three-quarter view, mouth soft, as though something is about to be delivered.

The Labrador Retriever plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The Labrador Retriever is Archive No. 003. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
