A cattle dog built low enough to duck a kick. That is the whole design. In Pembrokeshire, corgis drove stock to market by nipping at heels and dropping flat when hooves came back at them, and the old Welsh laws record the drover's dog as an animal of real value centuries before any kennel club existed. Royal association arrived in 1933 with a puppy called Dookie. The working instinct went nowhere: corgis still herd ankles, still hold strong opinions and voice them at length, and still moult an improbable volume of undercoat for their size. The drawing sets the long body and short legs in true proportion rather than softening them, and gives the ears their full height, since they are the first thing anyone sees coming.
