Dachs means badger and Hund means dog, which leaves little room for confusion. German foresters had the type by the seventeenth century: a hound shortened in the leg to follow badger and fox into the earth, bold enough to hold quarry underground, and fitted with a bark loud enough to be located through several feet of soil. That bark still lives inside a dog that fits under a coffee table. The smooth coat is the oldest of the three varieties. Owners recognise the tunnelling, the disappearance under a duvet, the rearrangement of every cushion, and the particular stubbornness of an animal bred to make its own decisions out of sight of its handler. The plate is drawn in strict profile, with the chest and the set of the front feet given close attention.

The Smooth-Haired Dachshund plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The Smooth-Haired Dachshund is Archive No. 006. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
