Dachs means badger and Hund means dog, which leaves little room for confusion. German foresters had the type by the seventeenth century: a hound shortened in the leg to follow badger and fox into the earth, bold enough to hold quarry underground, and fitted with a bark loud enough to be located through several feet of soil. That bark still lives inside a dog that fits under a coffee table. The smooth coat is the oldest of the three varieties. Owners recognise the tunnelling, the disappearance under a duvet, the rearrangement of every cushion, and the particular stubbornness of an animal bred to make its own decisions out of sight of its handler.
