About the Standard Poodle

Pudeln is German for splashing about, and the Poodle began as a water retriever on the rivers and marshes of northern Europe, sent out after duck. Even the clip was practical, the coat cut back for swimming with cover left over the joints and the chest. France adopted the breed so completely that most people now assume it started there. The intelligence is genuine and mildly inconvenient, because a Poodle given nothing to do will invent a project of its own. Owners also know the coat, which does not moult but mats, and the sensitivity that makes a raised voice land harder than intended. Rather than draw the show trim, the archive plate takes the head and coat in a natural state, closer to the animal that once fetched birds out of cold water.
