The Whippet story
NORTHERN ENGLAND

In the pit villages of County Durham, Northumberland and Lancashire, working men kept a small greyhound they could feed on a miner's wage and race on a Saturday, either after rabbits or up a straight track towards a waved rag. The poor man's racehorse was less an affectionate nickname than a plain description, and the Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1891. Anyone living with one knows the arithmetic: roughly twenty hours of horizontal sleep in the warmest spot available, interrupted by ninety seconds at thirty-five miles an hour, followed by a return to the sofa and a firm request for a blanket. The drawing keeps the deep chest and tucked loin exact, and shows the dog curled rather than running, which is the more honest posture by some margin.

The Whippet plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The Whippet is Archive No. 023. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
