Yorkshire Terrier archive tees, sweatshirts and hoodies

Scottish weavers moving south to the mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire in the mid-nineteenth century brought small terriers with them, and the dogs earned their keep killing rats in the mills and the pits. Huddersfield Ben, whelped in 1865, is the dog most of the breed traces back to. The coat, long and fine and parted down the spine, arrived later with the show bench, but the terrier underneath was never diluted. Owners know that nobody has yet informed a Yorkshire Terrier of its size: the announcement of every delivery driver, the willingness to challenge a retriever, the insistence on inspecting an entire house before settling. In the archive image the artist drew the coat in long unbroken strokes and left the face uncluttered, so the terrier expression is not lost inside it.
