The Dalmatian story
DALMATIA
Drawn as an original engraving in its own landscape and printed as a full archive plate. Comes as a tee, a sweatshirt, a hoodie, a print and a pack of cards, from £30.00.
The spots are older than the name. Spotted dogs appear in Egyptian tomb paintings and Italian frescoes, and the breed was fixed in England in the nineteenth century as a carriage dog, running beside or beneath the coach for miles and guarding it at the inn. The affinity with horses is bred in, which is why fire brigades kept them once the engines were horse-drawn. Every Dalmatian is born white and spots up over the first weeks; no two are marked the same. They are athletic, need real distance every day, and are prone to deafness, which responsible breeders test for. The artist set the dog in a coaching inn yard beside a carriage wheel with a horse being led through the arch, and drew the spots as solid black against an almost unhatched white coat, since the pattern is the whole point.

The Dalmatian plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The Dalmatian is Archive No. 032. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
