The English Bulldog story

Bred for bull-baiting until the sport was banned in 1835, then remade within a generation into something that could not have done the job: heavier, shorter in the face, and good-natured to the point of comedy. The Victorians took the breed up as a national emblem, and it has stood for a certain kind of stubborn Englishness ever since, most of it affectionate. The modern dog is a companion first: slow, sociable, fond of children and of lying across doorways. The breathing and the folds need looking after, and the honest breeders are working on both. The artist set the dog before a Georgian doorway with railings and an inn sign, drawn seated, since standing is not what a Bulldog does when it has a choice, and gave the face its wrinkles in light, separated lines so the print does not clog.

The English Bulldog plate
Every plate in the archive is drawn from scratch as a natural-history engraving, the breed set in the country it was made for rather than floated on a white background. The English Bulldog is Archive No. 030. The drawing is printed as a full plate across the back of the garment, nothing on the front, and the same plate is used for the print and the cards.
Garments are made when they are ordered, so nothing is printed until it is wanted and nothing is held in a warehouse. UK orders are printed in the UK and North American orders in the USA, which keeps the parcel on the same side of the ocean as the person waiting for it. If it is not right when it arrives, it can go back within 30 days.
